Drought Resilience Debt Drives NPP Decline in the Amazon Forest

چکیده
Climate change has substantially increased the frequency of extreme droughts in Amazon basin, generating concern about impacts on world's largest tropical forest, which contributes one-seventh global vegetation carbon sink. Most research to understand drought focused immediate influences such events, neglecting post-drought effects ecosystems recovery. Since ecological processes are influenced by antecedent conditions, we analyzed whether affect growth (i.e., net primary productivity, NPP) Here, evaluated NPP basin from 2003 2020, a period was almost double decadal incidence last century. We show that does respond coupled individual and during ecosystem In particular, our results reveal undergoing recovery 13% lower than reference values based pre-drought state or areas undisturbed drought. deficits have consistently with 2005, 2010, 2015 due combined disturbances magnitude length If expected increase intensity occur, reduced may lead Forest an alternative uptake, contributing warming climate.

Drought-induced forest decline: causes, scope and implications.
A large number of episodes of forest mortality associated with drought and heat stress have been detected worldwide in recent decades, suggesting that some of the world's forested ecosystems may be already responding to climate change. Here, we summarize a special session titled 'Drought-induced forest decline: causes, scope and implications' within the 12th European Ecological Federation Congr...
متن کاملThe changing Amazon forest
Long-term monitoring of distributed, multiple plots is the key to quantify macroecological patterns and changes. Here we examine the evidence for concerted changes in the structure, dynamics and composition of old-growth Amazonian forests in the late twentieth century. In the 1980s and 1990s, mature forests gained biomass and underwent accelerated growth and dynamics, all consistent with a wide...
متن کاملPositive Feedbacks among Forest Fragmentation, Drought, and Climate Change in the Amazon
The Amazon basin is experiencing rapid forest loss and fragmentation. Fragmented forests are more prone than intact forests to periodic damage from El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) droughts, which cause elevated tree mortality, increased litterfall, shifts in plant phenology, and other ecological changes, especially near forest edges. Moreover, positive feedbacks among forest loss, fragmenta...
متن کاملWhat Drives Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon?
While previous empirical analysis of deforestation focused on population, this paper builds from a model of land use which suggests many determinants of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon. I derive a deforestation equation from this model and test a number of those factors using county-level data for the period 1978]1988. The data include a satellite deforestation measure which allows improv...
متن کاملMortality of large trees and lianas following experimental drought in an Amazon forest.
Severe drought episodes such as those associated with El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events influence large areas of tropical forest and may become more frequent in the future. One of the most important forest responses to severe drought is tree mortality, which alters forest structure, composition, carbon content, and flammability, and which varies widely. This study tests the hypothesis ...
